In recent years, a number of prominent public intellectuals have identified "postmodernism" as the ideological basis of contemporary authoritarian political movements. They have blamed postmodernism, in particular the body of ideas of the French philosophers Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, for providing the intellectual justification for attacks on free speech and due process, for shielding political terrorists from criticism, and for undermining scientific progress. Meanwhile, "social justice" activists on college campuses have employed the language of postmodernist philosophers in their campaigns to ban "hate speech" and "discursive violence" and to vastly expand the definitions of rape and sexual assault.
In this 90-minute interactive webinar we will do what very few people on either side of the postmodernism controversy seem to have done: examine the writings of postmodernist thinkers.
We will address the major questions raised by the work of Derrida, Foucault, and other philosophers associated with postmodernism:
- Does truth exist?
- Is there a reality that exists outside and apart from human consciousness?
- Can ethics be objective?
- What purposes have truth claims served?
- What are scientific "facts"?
- What is power, who holds it, and where is it?
- Is physical punishment more effective than shame?
- Does power operate from the top of a society downward or from the bottom of society upward, or does it move in different directions and originate from multiple sources?
- Are words violent?
- Does one's biology determine one's destiny?
- Was I born a man?
- Does freedom exist?
